Psalm 35, 36 and 37 verbatim

There is no question that we ought to be singing the Psalms, but to which melodies? Along with inspiring the words to the Psalms, God could have inspired his own melodies as well, but he did not. I speculate that the reason for his not giving us inspired melodies along with the inspired texts is that he has always intended for his people to utilize their God-given talents to clothe these texts with melodies appropriate to the respective cultures of his multinational family. I am not a seventeenth century Englishman; why ought I limit myself and my family to singing God's ever fresh truth in melodies of sixteenth century England? Some Christian sects have apparently decided that there was something especially holy about the nineteenth century, and so they dress and work their farms as if it were 1850. In their view, any technology developed after "the holy time" is inappropriate and even destructive. With a similar irrationality, many of our churches seem to have adopted the same attitude with respect to music.

Let twenty first century Christians write music for the Psalms that is appropriate for the twenty first century. This CD is another installment in my ongoing effort to do just that. I have thought that the pleas for justice that characterize Psalms 35-37 called for an aggressive musical style. These texts are not uniformly soothing; parts of them are quite anguished; some of them are exulting in their confident expectation of God's justice upon the wicked. I have attempted to write music that is appropriate to the various moods of the text.

The Baptist Catechism
Set to Music

"For most people it is much easier to memorize a text if it is set to music. In composing the tunes for The Baptist Catechism I have endeavored to make each tune simple, suited to the text, and capable of being sung without musical accompaniment. I have also tried to compose music that children and young people will enjoy singing."

Fine Linen
All music by Jim Scott Orrick

This project consists of two parts: the first part, songs one through eight, is made up mostly of texts that I have written. The second part, songs nine through fifteen, is made up of texts written by Christian poets who are universally recognized to be among the greatest poets in the English language. While these poets were once widely read in the Christian community, and appreciated for their powerful expressions of Truth; these authors are now studied almost exclusively by students of English literature, and appreciation for them is sometimes limited to admiration of their poetic skill. But not only do these poets write beautifully, they have something to say --something of eternal value. I hope that this project will help reintroduce these dear older brothers to the family. They are worth hearing.
